Black Creek Park
April 20, 2013
On the morning of the April 20 Black Creek meet the sun rose brightly in the east. Unfortunately, in the
west was a wall of black clouds. The weather turned out to be a mixture of rain, snow and occasional
sun, all with a powerful wind from the west. Our open shelter was shielded by a wall of large tarps,
thanks to the Burgeys and others who pitched in. In the woods, we were out of the wind, but often
wading in early season muck. In spite of all this, about 90 people showed up eager to get out into it.
Black Creek Park is mostly flat, and half of it is marsh. Very little of what remains is open forest, and
these areas have few features to place a control on. Course setter Rob Holmes found a way to create 6
courses going through this maze. One challenge to orienteers was to get around marshy areas when a
straight line route was impossible.
