Potluck items.

ROC Orienteering Team Challenge
For this year's annual meeting orienteering event, we will have teams
of 3-4 work together to complete three different orienteering challenges
as fast as possible while having fun chilling out with your fellow orienteers.
Teams will be formed at the start of the event. Teams will be assigned to the
first challenge but can choose the order of the 2nd and 3rd challenges. Now
for a brief description of the challenges:
Gridmania-O: Team members alternate walking/running ten grid-O courses back to
back. After confirming an individual grid-O was successfully completed. The
team will clear and check their epunch and then it is off to the next grid-O
course. This continues until all courses are completed.
Memory-O: Teams can only view maps in a designated area and must visit
approximately 10 controls in any order without a map. Not all team members
have to be out at the same time, but there is only one epunch dibbler per team.
One team member can punch a portion of the controls, while others are memorizing
the map for other controls.
Straight-O: Two maps will be provided with 13 control locations with playing cards
affixed to each control. The team is expected to visit all the controls and see the
cards on each control. The team will then gather and decide which controls to visit
so the team has a straight of five consecutive cards and no additional controls.
For those quick teams that want a bonus challenge, a team can attempt a Cell-O course.
Cell-O is where one team member is a runner but does not have a map and the rest of the
team remains in the warmth of the lodge with a map and give verbal directions using cell
phones to the runner. The runner is permitted to take a compass. If you want to try
this challenge be sure to bring a cell phone and a headset if you have one.

Next event Camp Eastman Vampire-O at Veteran's Memorial Cabin. Event
is on October 18, starts at 7:00pm. Arrive at 6:00 and register/check
in, there will be games and costume contest. Those in costume earn an
extra point for the event so dress up. Bring a flashlight and/or
headlamp and a watch to keep track of the time limit.
Vampire-O is a cross of orienteering and flashlight tag. Navigate and
find checkpoints to earn points, but also avoid the vampires that will
tag you and take your score card. You then become a vampire and have

entertained.

July 31, 2014
The next ROC meet will be next Thursday, Aug. 7.

Courses offered are:
Score-O: 28 controls, 45-minute time limit. Mass start at 7 pm. 1:10000 scale map.
Sprint: 1.5 km, 10 controls. Start anytime between 6 pm and 7 pm. 1:5000 scale map.
White: 2.0 km, 8 controls. Start anytime between 6 pm and 7 pm. 1:5000 scale map.
(There may be some slight changes in course lengths as the courses still need to be fine-tuned.)
All courses close at 7:45 pm sharp.
Note that the White course, although longer than the Sprint, is
distinctly easier navigationally. Thus, the White course is
recommended for beginners or people with limited orienteering
experience, rather than the Sprint.
Registration will open around 5:30 pm.

July 22, 2014
Results from the Durand Eastman Park Trail Challenge are now available on the
results page.
July 15, 2014
Trail Challenge (4 km and 8 km), Tuesday, July 22, 6:30 pm mass start
Durand Eastman Park
The next ROC event is a Trail Challenge at Acorn Shelter, Durand Eastman
Park. Acorn Shelter is on Log Cabin Road, off of Lake Road. Acorn is the
first shelter, on the right side of the road, approximately 0.2 miles
from Lake Road.
A Trail Challenge is a mass start cross-country race over tracks and
trails with a difference. The course is not marked out by marshals and
streamers but is instead defined by checkpoints that are marked on a
specially made map. The Trail Challenge arises from choosing the fastest
route between one checkpoint to the next.
These mass start races require navigation to visit a series of checkpoints
along the way. Feel free to follow other runners or enter with a friend
and work together. Basic navigation instruction is available during
registration and check in.
The event will start at 6:30 p.m. (everyone starts at the same time).
Registration/check-in opens at 5:50 p.m.
Unlike regular orienteering meets, as soon as you check in, you receive
your map! So to have the maximum time to get familiar with the map and
plan your route, arrive early!
There will be two distances to choose from - 8 km and 4 km. Note that
unlike most orienteering courses where the distances refer to the
straight-line distances from control to control, these distances are the
estimated best-route distances that people will cover. There are a few
places where distance can be reduced by cutting through woods, and of
course nearly an infinite number of ways that a person's distance could
be more than the stated distances!
The time limit is 90 minutes for both distances. Please be back by 8 pm
even if you can't complete all of the controls on the second loop. If you
plan on walking the entire distance, please plan on doing the 4K. If you
can run at all, even slowly (say 12 minutes/mile), you should be able to
finish the 8K course within the time limit, even with a few "non-optimum"
routes.
To offer maximum flexibility in terms of which distance to do, you do not
need to choose the distance before the race. This course consists of two
(non-identical, but similar) loops of approximately 4K each. There will
be two maps which everyone will receive (back to back); one of the first
loop and one of the second loop.
If you want to do the 4K, simply punch the finish control after the first
loop and you're done. If you want to do the 8K, do NOT punch the finish
control, but instead punch control #14 on your map, which is very close
to the start-finish area; turn your map over to see the map of the 2nd
loop, and continue.
We will have a time cutoff of 7:15 for starting the second loop; if you
complete the first loop after 7:15, you'll need to finish rather than
doing the 2nd loop.
You are strongly encouraged to pre-register, to save you money and to
allow things to go much more smoothly at registration / check-in. Entry
fees for pre-registration are $5 for ROC members and $9 for non-members.
To make it even better, you don't even need to pre-pay when you
pre-register. You pay on the day of the meet. Day of meet entry fees are
$6 for members and $10 for non-members. Link for pre-registration:

Results from the Powder Mills Park meet are now available on the
results page.
July 6, 2014
The next orienteering meet will be Sunday, July 13th with starts form
12 noon until 2 pm. Location is Powder Mills Park at Shadyrest shelter
which is on the south side of Woolston Rd across from the downhill
ski area. Look for the "O" signs. A link to the
map of Power Mills Park from the Monroe County website.
Be sure to use our
Online Registration so we can have a better idea of the number of
maps we will need.
The courses offered for this meet are:
White
Sprint
Scatter-O Long
Scatter-O Short
All courses can start from 12 noon until 2:00 pm. Controls will be picked
up starting at 3:30pm. If you plan on competing in the Sprint and the
Scatter-O be sure to allow yourself enough time. Remember that there is a
$2.00 charge for competing in a second course.
There will be 2 Scatter-O courses. What is a Scatter-O you ask? You are given
a map with X number of controls marked on it, that you can visit in any order
and there is no time limit. However the shortest time to complete all controls
on the course is the winner.
Our Courses setter has 2 Scatter-O coursed planned for the meet. One has more
controls and will be a longer course.
** All courses will cross park roads: USE CAUTION WHEN CROSSING.
We could still use some volunteers for this meet, if you are a member and
planning on coming and would like to volunteer remember your meet fee = $0.00

This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in trying mountain

for the map to make it easy to determine which trails are easy,
intermediate and hard. The easy course is appropriate for all all
ages so bring the kiddies to try out their skills!

Red - 16 6.0 km 90m

Orange - 11 4.2 km 70m
Yellow - 10 2.9 km 45m

This time of year, the light and medium greens are in general
passable and quick. The rough open is also quite clear for the
most part. Although many boulders, pits, and deep depressions are
mapped, not all are mapped so don't rely solely on counting pits or
depressions when navigating.

"park and bike" from the main parking lot at the corner of Lake Rd and Holt Rd if possible.
We are also participating in Earth Month Clean-Up. Bags will be available for use in collecting
trash. Don't forget to pre-register online. There's a $1 discount for pre-registration and no
penalty if you decide not to attend.
This is a regular meet with starts from 10am - 12pm. Control pickup will begin at 1:30pm.
The following courses will be offered:
White - 10 controls 2.2k 30m
Yellow - 10 controls 3.0k 70m
Orange - 10 controls 3.8k 75m
Brown - 12 controls 3.8k 95m
Green - 13 controls 4.5k 105m
Red - 14 controls 6.5k 155m
Course setter notes: Start/Finish will be on the south side of Lake Rd. The park is
very wet and muddy. Expect to get your feet wet on all courses. There are lots of deer
tracks criscrossing the medium green "forest, slow" areas. Visibility through the woods
is great since there are no leaves yet. There is a lot of blow down, especially in the
pine woods. This makes some of the "easy forest" sections more challenging. No courses
will cross Lake Rd. Be sure to check yourself for ticks after the event.
See you there!

January 15, 2014
Are you missing orienteering? Ready to get out in the woods? This
Sunday the annual Winterfest
is taking place at Mendon Ponds Park. Each year we end up being down
to the wire, wondering if we will have snow for Winterfest. Things
aren't looking good for this year, but that doesn't stop us from
enjoying some winter orienteering. Course setter Jim Russell is
doing his best to set courses that will work in any conditions. This
is what he has so far, subject to some tweaks:
White (beginner): 1.7 km 6 controls
Yellow/orange (intermediate): 3.3 km 7 controls
Brown (short advanced): 4.1 km 7 controls
Green (long advanced): 5.3 km 9 controls
We encourage beginners and are offering the White course for FREE as
part of Winterfest! ROC's usual fees apply to all other courses.
Registration opens at 11 am. Starts from 11:30 to 2 pm.

come after all. We'll take care of that for you. Pay when you arrive,
no penalty for no-shows.
There will lots of other demonstrations and activities taking place
around the park for you to enjoy, too!
