Dryer Road Park
May 22, 2011
Well, since this was my first attempt trying out the Meet Director role, I have to say that my responsibilities were made much more manageable due to the very dedicated and talented group of volunteers that put forth above and beyond effort to put on a successful event on Sunday.Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you!!!!!! First of all, Jim Russell, for setting a challenging course in a challenging park with a spiderweb of trails and then expanding that onto neighboring hills besides, just to add to the "fun" factor. From what I heard, the courses provided quite the mental and physical workout which Mother Nature added to by having the already difficult conditions, being made more challenging when it began raining midway through the afternoon.Other than some episodes of light rain,it was a great day to hold a meet I thought, but then, I wasn't out running around in the rain either because it was nice and dry under the pavilion...
Jim had lots of control setting assistance from the the Worner/Kohn clan of Rick,Linda and Lindsay, Sunday am. and they were able to finish just in time for our 12:00 start. Thank you to the Borden clan of Patty,Jim, Zak and Tyler for their registration and start and finish help which kept them busy all afternoon. The Bordens also helped with the post meet cleanup along with Rick and Dayle Lavine who graciously allowed us to stuff their vehicle with all of the meet boxes, equipment, etc. in preparation for the next event. Thanks also to Ravi Nareppa who seems to spend alot of time sitting in front of a computer screen at these events and to Dick Detweiler who also helped at Start/Finish.Thank you also to Carol Moran, Sandra Lomker and Ruhksana Cofer for their very efficient registration assistance. They were able to get 74 starts and 85 entries total, out onto the courses in a very timely manner.
Thank you to Tom Cornell for his friendly greetings to our first time and veteran participants. I saw that Randy Mcgarvey was kept busy with his instruction clinic when we had an impressive number of curious and first time O-er's show up for the event. I think that there were several new people that had come to the park to either bike or have their kids enjoy the playground and roller rink, that also decided to see what the orange and white signs were all about.Several young O-er's were able to enjoy the string O set up by Stephanie and Faith Reh. The crowds were kept very well nourished by the above and beyond efforts of Barb Schroo. Barb must have spent most of the week playing Betty Crocker by baking a wide array of delicious treats. She also provided a great assortment of fruits and other snacks including cheese/crackers and pepperoni. I think the only thing missing was a couple of bottles of wine and maybe that little oversight could be included the next time......
Gary Maslanka and Riesa Cassano were able to pinch hit for us even though they weren't "official" volunteers for the event, by filling in on multiple tasks including start and general assistance where needed. The control picker upper crew of Jim Pamper, Brian Thomas,Mike,Zach and Nate Lyons had the big job of retrieving the controls from all of the far flung places of the courses which gave them all yet another big workout. A big sigh of relief from me and thanks to Tyler Borden from an appreciative and electronically challenged Meet Director, for preparing all of the results so that I didn't have to muddle through that.
And last but not least, thank you very much to my "unofficial" Co-Meet Director, Jim Pamper, who helped out with a myriad of tasks in front of and behind the scenes, in preparation for the meet, during the meet and post meet. He had some new ideas which improved the overall efficiency of the meet which made it easier for all of us volunteers. .
All in all, I would say that we had a great turnout of volunteers, and participants that were able to enjoy a great day of Orienteering at a challenging park on a weather day that cooperated for the most part in that it didn't rain for the entire day as has become the norm for all of us here in Rochester. Something to be appreciated for certain.
Happy O-ing to one and all.
Sandi Willsey, Meet Director
