Well, to say it was an interesting weather day for our ROC meet at Rotary Sunshine Camp on June 3rd, would be the understatement of the year thus far!! We certainly had all kinds of precipitation, from light mist to the heaviest of downpours. Factor in the wind and the cooler temps and the challenge of the courses, it made for a memorable “O” type of day. We had 83 hearty souls who came out to spend part of their day either getting soaked to the skin or, venturing out in between the torrents and hoping for the best. I have to say that it was very interesting watching participants running for the finish with visibility near zero at times, due to the impressive rainfall. I thought that Sergey had an interesting finish with a lot of flair, which included crawling under the table, to get through the building to the final control on the other side. Fortunately, we had a great venue which allowed for plenty of space to dry out, indoor bathrooms and a roaring fire for which to get rid of the goose bumps and let your clothes steam away the moisture. All those soaked participants and the lucky ones who managed to stay drier, all thoroughly enjoyed the delicious baked good assortment and watermelon provided by the ever smiling and cheerful, Mary Kolva. Thanks Mary!

Once again the ROC Meet couldn’t have been successful as it was, without the generous assistance of all the volunteers. Gary Maslanka made very good use of the property at the camp, and had multiple courses for the offering. Will Hawkins lent his highest level O skills, as course consultant and vetter. Per usual, as Meet Director, I had the assistance of Jim Pamper as the unofficial Assistant Meet Director, who helped out with all kinds of tasks, before, during and after the event. The extra help certainly makes things go smoothly. A shout out to Rick Worner for his assistant at the meet too, it was appreciated. The always friendly Laurie Hunt, was our greeter. Linda Kohn lent her knowledge as the instructor for the event and seemed to have a steady stream of newbies to assist. Our littlest O participants had fun with the very creative design of the String-O course set by Faith and Stephanie Reh. I thought that they made great use of the water park in laying out their route.

Registration went very smoothly thanks to 43 people pre-registering and due to the very capable assistance of Rafael Frutos,Anne Schwartz, Elizabeth Hane and Patty Borden. Thanks. Start/Finish was run as smoothly as ever by the IT savvy folks, of Tyler Borden, Jim Borden, Stina Bridgeman and the newly trained Start/Finish guy, Don Hammen. Thanks for all of your efforts and thanks for all the long hours that you put in for every meet to provide us participants with results so efficiently. At the end of a long and very very soggy day, we still had plenty of volunteers willing to go back out and get soaked and muddied up again, in order to pick up controls. A big shout out and thank you goes out to Joel Shore, Rafael Frutos,Zak Borden, Chad Borden, Mark Wade, Sergey Dobretsov and Jim Pamper. Since there were close to 40 controls spread out over a very wide area we needed every single one of the control pick up folks.

Thanks to everyone who made the June 3rd Rotary Sunshine ROC Meet a success!!!!!!!!! And just in case you think I missed the fun of the precipitation experience because I was inside the nice building by the fire focused on my Meet Director tasks…. I experienced all that precipitation while riding my bike from Farmington to Rush, which made for a very long ride and a very wet arrival. Who would have thought that a roaring fire would have been so welcome in June?

In the Lost and Found dept. I ended up with the following items as souvenirs from the event. I have a no longer soaking wet tan baseball cap that says Pittsford Lacrosse on it. I also have a very nice compass with a short gold cord at the end and an orange inner dial and a black outer dial. Please claim them at the next meet or call me at 585-398-7041 if you need them sooner.
