It was a gorgeous day at Powder Mill Park, sunny and cloudless with temperatures in the 80’s. The 10 am start time was fortuitous as the weather was hot for navigating Steve Tylock’s well-designed courses. It took some creativity to design courses that provided a challenge to all levels of participants with the park’s extensive network of roads. Thanks to Steve’s fine course-setting and a dedicated crew of volunteers everyone had a great time.

It seemed to be “family day” for ROC, with the Lamb family toting along the youngest orienteer, just over three weeks old. The Dobretsov’s latest addition to the clan also came out to enjoy the day. Our farthest traveller award goes to Stina Bridgeman’s father, who was visiting from Washington State. There were a number of family groups and it was great to see so many young orienteers. We were happy to see the Burgey family who have been absent while Richard recovers from an eye injury. We also had family volunteers, with Don and Cheri Winslow doing Greeting and Registration, Beth Turinsky and daughter Anna setting up String-O, the Lamb’s bringing delicious cookies, and Jamie and Sheri Mortillaro and Vince and Riesa Cassano doing flag pick-up. Special thanks also goes out to Mike Menadasy for giving instruction, Bob Bundy for registration, Tyler Borden and Joel Shore for manning the Start/Finish, and Pavel Korniliev for going beyond the call of duty in flag pick-up.

One special challenge to the course was having the String-O set up in the area of the final control. As I finished my course, hot and tired, I ran toward a sea of controls all in the vicinity of the last control. I should have realized that the small deciduous tree with the miniature control couldn’t be right, but had to check it out anyway. Steve made sure that the final control was placed behind the tree where a tired and confused runner would have to look for it. I can hear Steve now, “You should see the feature first...”.
