November 29, 2003
Long-awaited results of the Annual Trail Run at the Mendon Ponds Park have been published.

November 17, 2003
Permanent courses information has been added to the web site.
In addition, GPS is now a possibility on our permanent courses! The club has recently recorded the Latitude and Longitude of each of the controls which means that those of you who have a GPS can now use it to go out and complete the permanent courses.
More detailed information is available on the Permanent Courses page.

Night-O results have been published.

October 30, 2003
There will be a special night-O this Saturday, Nov. 1, at Mendon Ponds Park. The club hasn't held a "real" night-O for several years (the Grinch-O is at night, but it is a rather special event, as anyone who has participated knows!). We hope that many of you will come out to participate; Night-O is a lot of fun.

The courses will be ones that can be handled in the darkness reasonably well. We will be using the White and Yellow courses from the recent A-meet. The White course is all on trails, while the Yellow course can be completed by staying on trails up until the immediate area of the control, or there are a couple of places where a route choice would be to cut through the woods as opposed to taking a longer trail route.

In the interest of not having people out until all hours of the night, there will be a couple of changes from the normal meet procedure:
1. There will be a mass start at 5:30 pm (or a bit later if it isn't sufficiently dark by then).
2. There will be a strict 2-hour time limit on both courses. So if we start right at 5:30, everyone needs to be back by 7:30.

The starting location is at Stewart Lodge, which is near the beach parking lot. The courses will be slightly changed from the A-meet in that we will start right at Stewart Lodge, rather than starting across the road where the A-meet courses started.

Registration will begin at around 4:30 pm. Please contact Dick Detwiler with any questions on this meet.

September 18, 2003
September 20th is National Orienteering Day. Clubs all over the country are having meets intended to introduce newcomers to our sport. Our meet is at Highland Park in the city. The start is at the Recreation Center behind School #12 on South Avenue across from Highland Hospital. Registration begins at 11; starts are 12-2PM. With luck the hurricane or what is left of it will have moved out by then. If you have doubts whether the meet is on, call the hotline (585) 377-5650. It won't be cancelled unless conditions are considered dangerous.

As always we need help in several areas: registration, start/finish, and also crossing guards. You can work a short shift on any of these jobs before or after doing your course. Please let us know (by email or 585-442-6358) if you know you will be able to help; otherwise, approach Rick or Dayle at the meet.

Come and bring friends!

Results from the July 12 meet at Black Creek Park are now available.

July 8, 2003
Information on the meet at Black Creek Park this Saturday, July 12:

The start time is 10 a.m. (mass start) for the Score-O, and between 10:00 and 10:30 for the White courses. It is starting on the west side of the park. There are three events being offered:

  1. The main event is a SCORE-O
The SCORE-O format is a timed event. The control can be visited in any order. Each control has a different point value assigned to it and the winner is the person with the most points who has finished within the required time.
This event will last 90 minutes. There will be a penalty of 10 points per minute over 90 minutes. For example if you finish after 91 minutes and 20 seconds you will be penalized 20 points, a two minute penalty, minutes are rounded up. The controls are beginner (white) to orange (intermediate) level and are no more than 200 meters from a trail.
A few comments about the courses. This park is not well suited for a traditional orienteering course due to the heavy vegetation and the large swamp areas. Most of the day will be running or walking from area to area and then looking for the controls, it does put an big emphasis on running. Most of the trails are in good shape, most of the white areas are open, the rest of the vegetation areas need updating. It is strongly suggested you mainly stay on the trails unless near the control.
  2. The second event is a LONG WHITE Course (about 3.5 km). This is a course for runners who want to get the feel for map reading and get a nice run in along the way.
  3. The third event is a SHORT WHITE course (about 1 km), fairly short, a good introduction to orienteering. Can be completed in approximately 30 minutes of walking

Results from the June 15 combined bike-O and score-O meet at Mendon Ponds Park are now available.

June 11, 2003
Information about the orienteering meet this Sunday, June 15, at Mendon Ponds Park from the meet director, Rick Worner:

The format for this weekend will be a little different than our regular meets. There will be a Score O on foot and a Bike O. Participants can do one either event or both together. There will also be a regular beginner course. All events start at the beach parking lot in Mendon Ponds Park.

The Score O will begin at 1pm with a mass start. A Score O allows participants to collect controls in any order and a mass start means that everyone starts at the same time. You will need to arrive in time to register and get ready prior to the mass start. Shortly after the mass start anyone wishing to just do the Bike O can start on the bike course. People wishing to do both will start the Bike O when they finish the Score O course. Bikes will be guarded during theScore O. The Bike O will also be a Score O format.

Beginners can start anytime from 1-2 on a White course. All courses will stay within the park. Any kind of bike is OK, but please be reminded that bikes are not allowed on any park trails. All participants in the Bike O are required to wear a helmet.

Pizza and beverages will be available starting at 3. Please contact Rick Worner at wornerkohn@aol.com or by phone at 581-2979 if you have any questions.

Coursesetter's clinic: Each year a number members have requested an opportunity to learn more about being a course setter or meet director for one of our local meets. The club always needs more individuals willing to do these jobs.
With this in mind we will be offering members a chance to attend a workshop day on Sunday, March 23 from 2-5 at 874 Edgemere Drive. We will offer each workshop twice so that people may attend both sessions. The workshops will run around an hour with a short break for refreshments in between the sessions.
Please RSVP via e-mail by Thursday night so that we can prepare enough materials for all the participants. Our house can be reached by taking Rt. 390N to Latta Road exit. Turn right on Latta and take the first left on to Island Cottage Road. Follow Island Cottage to Edgemere Drive (Schallers Restaurant) and bear right to the curve in the road. We are the brown stucco house with the brown picket fence on your left. CAll 581-2979 if you get disoriented.

Again this year, Laurie Sallidan and Dick Detwiler will be teaching a 6-session orienteering course. It is offered through the Webster Continuing Ed program. The first session is Monday, April 28. There will be six sessions (no class on Memorial Day). The last class session is June 9. This class assumes no knowledge of orienteering, and covers beginning (White course), advanced beginning (Yellow course), and intermediate (Orange course) skills and concepts. It alternates classroom and outdoor sessions (session 1 is in the classroom, session 2 outdoors, session 3 in the classroom, etc.). The first two outdoor sessions are at Webster Park and the third outdoor session is at Irondequoit Bay Park West.
The cost is only $22 for the six sessions ($11 for seniors). Webster continuing ed program web site gives information on how to register.
*Important Note: The dates of the class that are shown on the web site are incorrect, it shows it starting April 7. This was an error in the booklet; the correct starting date is April 28.
