This Saturday night (November 13) there will be a night orienteering meet at Cobbs Hill Park with two courses: white and orange.
Both will use the same map, which shows 24 controls. Participants on the white course will get up to 10 controls, taken in any
order, with a time limit of one hour. Those on the orange course will get as many as possible, in any order, in one and a half
hours (a standard score-o.) Both will have a mass start at 5:30 PM. Allow extra time to register beforehand, since everyone will
be starting at the same time.
There will be about 12 controls at the white level of difficulty (trail junctions, etc.) but white course participants may choose
any 10 controls. The rest are yellow to orange in difficulty, but everything is harder at night! Bring a flashlight or headlamp
and compass. The controls will have reflecting tape which shows up clearly with a flashlight.
Most routes will involve road crossing, confusing woods, or both, so this course is probably not suitable for unaccompanied young children.
IMPORTANT: The open area around the reservoir is off limits for this meet! The area is now closed at night for security, and supposedly
monitored by cameras. you are likely to get in trouble if you stray into this area. There should be no temptation to do this, and the
restricted area is marked on the map.
Vegetarian chili and other refreshments will be available after the meet. The start and finish are at Tay House, up the hill from
School #1 on Hillside Ave, which is just south of 490 and runs west from Winton Rd., merges with Norris Drive which runs west to Culver Rd.
Oatka Creek Park directions below have been updated: if you go from I-390 Exit 11,
go WEST on Rt. 251.

The Club will host the next meet this coming Sunday, October 17. The site is a brand
new area for our club, Oatka Creek Park, near Scottsville. The park offers some
characteristics not generally found in other local parks, including probably the deepest
pits (from earlier mining activity) you've seen around here; also stone walls, rock piles,
and boulders (small to medium sized).
Courses offered will be as follows:
White: 2.6 km length, 50 meter climb
Yellow: 3.5 km, 85 meter climb
Brown: 4.1 km, 90 meter climb
Green: 5.4 km, 145 meter climb
Directions to the park:
Two sets of directions are given, one from I-490 exit 4 (near Chili), the other from I-390
exit 11 (near Rush). The park is approximately the same distance from I-490 exit 4 as it is
from I-390 exit 11, so depending on what direction you're coming from, one way will probably
be better than the other.
1. From I-490 exit 4: Go south on Rt. 259 (Union Street). Travel about 5 miles to where the
road ends in a "T";. Turn left, then take first right (still Union St.). Proceed approximately
1 mile to park entrance on right (shortly past the bridge over Oatka Creek).
2. From I-390 exit 11: Go west on Rt. 251. Proceed approximately 6.3 miles, going straight at
each intersection (do not follow Rt. 251 when it turns right). When you've gone as far as you
can go, park your car because you're there.

There's an orienteering meet this Saturday at Irondequoit Bay Park
West. Start times are between 12 and 2PM. Here's some information from the
course setter and some logistical information.
The courses will be short but with plenty of climb.
White course - 1.1 Km (65 meters of climb)
Yellow course - 1.7 Km (100 meters of climb)
Orange course - 3.1 Km (225 meters of climb)
Parking is going to be an issue. We will not be allowed to use the
Irondquoit Bay Fish and Game club upper lot as they have other
activities that will use most of the lot. Cars will need to be parked along the
road (PLEASE PARK ONLY ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD GOING AWAY FROM THE START
AREA - TO THE SOUTH PARK AWAY FROM THE BAY AND GOING NORTH PARK ON THE BAY
SIDE.CARS ON BOTH SIDES WILL CAUSE A SAFETY HAZARD) If possible, carpool to
reduce the number of cars in the area.
DIRECTIONS to the park:
Exit 590 at Empire Boulevard and head east (toward Irondequoit Bay).
Turn left on Orchard Park (just after you start to go down Empire into
the "dugway" or end of Irondequoit Bay).
Follow Orchard Park to the park which will wind down to the bay and
turn sharply left past a marina and then to the start area.

This Sunday, September 19th, we will celebrate National Orienteering Day with a meet in Highland Park.
The main goal of this meet is to introduce orienteering to people who haven't tried it before. Those
people will orienteer for free! So why not bring some friends and neighbors along? The courses will
be easier than usual, because the park is mostly open, and not too large. This is a chance to add some
speed, if you're so inclined, or just take a tour of the park at a beautiful time of year. And there are
still opportunities to get confused, as I did there at my first meet, though it was almost my back yard!
There will be white, yellow, and orange courses (i.e., beginner to intermediate) and special courses for GPS users.
We can also use help, whether it is manning a table for a while, or just reaching out to newcomers who may be unsure of what to do.
Starts will be as usual, from 12 to 2, with registration starting at 11:30. We will start at the Recreation Center behind
School # 12, in Rochester on South Avenue just northwest of Highland Park, opposite Highland Hospital. Look for orange and white signs.

Information about The Tour de Gorges rogaine event on September 11th has been updated.
The next local event will be a one hour Score-O
at Black Creek Park this Wednesday, August 11
with mass start at 6:30pm from Pathfinder shelter.
Directions:
Take I-490 West to exit 4, go South on Union St. (Rt 259) to the park entrance. Once you enter the park,
turn left and go all the way to the end of the paved road.
July 31 meet will be a Score-O with a mass start at 10AM from Magnolia
shelter at Durand Eastman Park.

The next meet will be a challenging Score-O at Irondequoit Bay Park East.
Course setter Joe Seyfried has put together a great course on the steep
terrain and trails along side the bay for those of you who think you're up
to it. For newer and more relaxed orienteers, he has included a White Course
as well. In addition, we will be hosting our first 'advertised' GPS event.
The start of the meet will be at 6:30PM on Wednesday July 14.
Most of you are already familiar with the Score-O and the White course. The GPS
event will consist of several controls taken from the White Course as well as
controls from the Score-O course. You will receive a list of coordinates and
will be able to download them from a laptop at the meet if you have the right cable.
The available software (Easy/Expert GPS) communicates through either a USB cable or a
serial cable. You will also receive a map of the park without any marked controls and a clue sheet.

On June 13, ROC will host one of our annual "fun" events.
This one will involve a combination of foot and canoe orienteering and
will be headquartered at the new Monroe county park off Empire Blvd at
the foot of Irondequoit Bay.
There is an intellegence report that suggests the foot part of the event will
involve controls spread
between Irondequoit Bay Park East and Ellison Park (yes, this is now
connected by a trail system).
The canoe part will cover large sections of the Wetlands and Irondequiot Creek.
More details (like the real coverage of the event) and start times will
be available early next week.

A mesaage from Kathy Bannister, course setter of the May 23 meet:
If you are willing to take a chance on weather, some pretested courses await
your arrival at Letchworth S.P. this Sunday. The starts will be NEAR
Trailside Lodge in the south end of the park 12 noon - 2pm.
The white course is 3km, 30m climb; yellow 3.46 km, 95 m climb; orange 5.33 km,
120 m climb are largely the same as those of the club A meet last fall.
So if you got to do the A meet you may want to opt for a different course.
The red course 6.96 km, 295m climb is a modification of last fall's blue course.
We will not be doing e punching.
Directions: NY I-390 south to Mt. Morris (exit 7), turn left on Rt. 408. Follow Rt. 408
for about 10 miles to Nunda, go right on Rt. 436 to Portageville for about 5 miles,
after the bridge turn right on Rt. 19a. Park entrance will be on the right side.
Trailside Lodge is located off the main road at the South end of the park; look for the signs and our tent.
Please be aware that there is a park entrance fee
($6. I believe) per car. The club could use a couple more volunteers at registration.
So come on out for a little mental and physical exercise, meet old friends and have a great day.
Our next event will take place on Saturday, May 8 at Mendon Ponds Park. The forecast
for looks promising and the woods are still
nice and open so get ready for a great day on one our best orienteering
maps. Veteran course setter Linda Kohn is doing the courses so you know they
will be fair and challenging:

ORANGE 3.9 km
GREEN 4.8 km
RED 6.0 km
E-punching will be required on O,G,R courses. Rental E-punches are
available. All maps will be pre-printed with courses thanks to Jim Russell.
The location is Calvary Lodge. Enter the park off Clover Street
(Rt. 65) at the north or south entrance. Follow the orange and white signs to
the lodge on Douglas Road. There is a small parking area next to the lodge
and another area southwest of Calvary.
We will likely have a good turnout so if you want to get out quickly
click here and print the entry form
and complete it before you arrive. This is especially true for larger
groups. Starts are from 12-2 with the biggest backups occurring at the beginning.
Consider coming a little later to avoid the crush.

Things look good for the Mendon Ponds Ski-O in Rochester, Sunday, February 25.
We have been getting snow every day for weeks, and it looks like that will continue.
The skiing here is the best we have seen in a long time. Many of the trails are groomed
for skating; these are in the hilly area. There are also trails with skier-made diagonal
tracks, mostly in the flatter parts. There will be 3 competitive courses, about 8-15 km
skiable route, and a recreational course. Everyone will have to cross plowed roads.
The meet is at Cavalry Lodge, which is heated. Starts are from 12-2. All but fast
skiers should try to start by 1.
Copying EMPO, we will also offer a short but challenging snowshoe course. Our meet
is part of Winterfest, which will be in progress throughout the park; it offers
various outdoor related activities.
Cavalry does not have waxing facilities. (Put on cold wax before you come!)
There is an outhouse. Running water and bathrooms are available at Stewart
Lodge, about a mile away. Snacks will be offered.
Well winter arrived just in the nick of time!
This Saturday starts the Ski Orienteering season here in Western New
York, and the place to be is Webster Park.
This race is also a qualifying race for the Empire State Games in
February.
We'll have 3 courses this weekend:
Short (White): 3K 33m climb --- rec course
Medium (Orange) 6.2K 57 m climb --- M/F Scholastic, Female masters
Long (red) 9.1K 120 m climb -- M/F Open, M Masters
Note that for ski orienteering, course lengths are determined by the
shortest ski-able routes, so they are not really that much longer than
normal events.
If you enjoy orienteering, and like to play in the snow (preferably
with cross country skis), come out and join us.Normal starting times
are 12-2 with flag pickup about 3:30. Standard ROC rates apply ($3 for members,
$5 non menbers), except there is a $2 added charge for ESG qualifiers.

The ski-orienteering season is starting. We have a meet scheduled this Saturday at Webster park,
and another in Mendon Ponds Sunday, January 25. (That one will be a part of Winterfest, with lots
of opportuniyies for winter fun.)
There are other ski-o events scheduled in upstate NY.
These are mostly qualifiers for the Empire State Games. Those who do 2 ski-os in their age group, and join NYSSRA
can compete in the games in Lake Placid. (There is an additional $2 charge for those attempting to qualify.) Juniors
qualifying for the Games can have their entry fees refunded. Everyone is also welcome to try the races just for fun, too.
Our meet this weekend won't happen unless we get more snow. (Call the hotline 585-377-5650 for info after Thursday).
If it does go on, we could use some help at registration and start/finish. All helpers will be able to ski.
There are 3 courses planned: 3.5, 5.5, and 10 kilometers.
